From Mayo Clinic Women’s Newsletter, June 2007, “A Reality on Anti-Wrinkle Products” Although not everyone wrinkles in the same way, the development of facial lines and creases is a natural part of aging. That’s because as you grow older, your skin gets thinner, drier, and less elastic. Some products may claim to erase signs of aging, but in reality, there are no age-reversal magic potions. Here are some of the best active ingredients added to facial creams and lotions available on the market for wrinkle management: Tea extracts. Green tea extracts added to wrinkle creams contain compounds thought to reduce inflammation and neutralize free radicals that damage the skin. Retinol. Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It’s also the first antioxidant widely used in nonprescription wrinkle creams. Antioxidants are a common ingredient in many anti-aging products because they can neutralize free radicals – unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells and cause signs of aging. Hydroxy acids. These acids are synthetic versions of acids naturally found in sugar-containing fruits. They act as exfoliants, removing the upper layer of old, dead skin, and stimulating the growth of new skin. Coenzyme Q10. Often referred to as CoQ10, this nutrient helps regulate energy production in cells. Copper peptides. Copper is a trace element. In products applied to the skin, it’s combined with small protein fragments called peptides. Copper peptides can stimulate the production of collagen and may enhance the action of antioxidants. Kinetin. This ingredient is a plant growth factor that may reduce wrinkles by helping skin retain moisture and by stimulating the production of collagen. |
